Interesting. I've only been on security / operating system-level engineering teams building things that either integrate as part of a whole product (a set top box) or in support of the company's service. I've never really had to sell software. Have you been a part of selling enterprise software?

So, Ulysses [ulyssesapp.com] is switching to a subscription model. I haven't been using it much lately, but their post [medium.com] on the subject is quite interesting and illuminating (at least, it was for me) on the economics of app development.
